Exxaro Resources Exploring Major Manganese Acquisition

Exxaro Resources, a leading South African coal producer, is currently negotiating the potential acquisition of Tshipi Borwa manganese mine for approximately $640 million (R11.67 billion). This strategic move represents Exxaro’s significant effort to diversify beyond coal and strengthen its position in the manganese industry. Located in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, Tshipi Borwa ranks among the country’s largest manganese operations. The mine is currently under joint ownership between Jupiter Mines Ltd. and Ntsimbintle Mining Ltd., with Ntsimbintle holding a substantial stake. The growing global demand for manganese critical for both traditional steel production and emerging electric vehicle battery technology aligns perfectly with Exxaro’s strategic pivot toward metals supporting green energy transition. While negotiations continue, the deal remains uncertain as Tshipi Borwa’s owners may explore alternative buyers or options. Exxaro’s interest reflects the broader mining industry trend of positioning for increased demand in minerals essential to clean energy technologies.
