BASF has successfully manufactured Central Europe’s first certified green hydrogen-based ammonia at its Ludwigshafen facility in Germany. The groundbreaking production uses a powerful 54-megawatt PEM electrolyzer running entirely on renewable energy sources, developed through strategic collaboration with Siemens Energy. This achievement represents an advancement in chemical manufacturing decarbonization efforts. The company’s innovative BMBcert™ ammonia boasts a carbon footprint reduction of at least 65% compared to conventional alternatives, achieved through an integrated approach combining green hydrogen, biomethane derived from biowaste, and renewable electricity. The product has received prestigious ISCC PLUS certification and has already entered commercial markets via a partnership with Evonik. This development signals a transformative shift toward sustainable industrial practices across the chemical sector and beyond.
